Nvidia may co-sign billions in debt for Nscale's West Virginia AI campus
Nvidia is weighing billions in credit guarantees to help Nscale borrow for a West Virginia AI campus, per The Information. Anthropic has already agreed to rent the first building for roughly $45 billion. The chipmaker would be supplier, shareholder and backstop all at once.
Nvidia is in advanced talks to put its own credit behind Nscale's data center campus in West Virginia. The guarantees on the table could run into the billions and would help the UK-based AI cloud provider borrow what it needs to build. The discussions are non-binding, so nothing is signed and the size or structure could still shift or fall apart. The Information first reported the talks on October 29, 2026, with Bloomberg and Reuters confirming the same day.
The campus already has a marquee tenant. Anthropic agreed in August 2026 to pay approximately $45 billion to rent computing capacity from the first building, a 460-megawatt facility. That's the spend Nvidia's backing is aimed at: electricity and construction, the two costs that usually blow up data center budgets before a single model trains. A rental contract is only as good as the building that shows up, and financing support lowers the odds the 460-megawatt site lands late or never.
The hardware inside would be Nvidia's own, including its next-generation Vera Rubin processors. So the debt Nvidia helps unlock partly circles back into demand for Nvidia's newest chips. The company isn't showing up cold here — it has already invested in Nscale and has been pressing for faster AI data center buildouts across its customer base.
A credit guarantee works like a parent co-signing a lease for a kid with a great job offer and no rental history. Lenders stop sweating the thin track record once a deep-pocketed name promises to cover the bill if things go sideways. For Nscale, that could mean easier access to debt and better terms than it could land on its own. It already has one strong selling point in Anthropic's roughly $45 billion commitment — Nvidia standing behind the debt would be a stronger one.
The strategic logic for the chipmaker is direct enough. Nvidia's revenue depends on somebody, somewhere, building facilities to house its chips, and when builders can't raise money, orders slow. Backstopping them keeps the pipeline moving. Other Nvidia-backed AI firms, including CoreWeave and Firmus, have run into similar financing strains.
The downside is that guarantees aren't free even when no cash moves upfront. If a guaranteed borrower stumbles, the guarantor can end up on the hook — exposure that has nothing to do with chip sales and everything to do with how well a smaller cloud provider runs a massive construction project. Watch three things: whether the non-binding talks become a signed deal and at what size, how lenders price Nscale's debt if Nvidia's backing lands, and whether similar arrangements surface for other cash-strapped Nvidia-backed operators.
