Justin Sun: Quantum Machines Could Break Crypto in Two Years
TRON CEO Justin Sun says quantum computers could threaten crypto within one to two years, warning that public-key cryptography and exposed wallet addresses are prime targets. He points to ECDSA signatures and Shor's algorithm as the danger zone, while TRON pushes post-quantum cryptography on its testnet.
Justin Sun isn't waiting for the quantum panic to arrive before sounding the alarm. In an interview with FINTECH.TV, the TRON CEO said quantum computers could start threatening crypto wallets within the next year or two — far sooner than most people assume. Breakthroughs in quantum infrastructure are making the machines more powerful, and that means their ability to crack cryptographic systems is closing in fast.
The weak spot Sun points to is public-key cryptography, which underpins Bitcoin, Ethereum and most other chains. Signatures like ECDSA could fall to Shor's algorithm once fault-tolerant quantum machines get strong enough. Sun's bigger worry: most crypto sits in addresses with exposed public keys, so the targets are already lined up.
The clock may already be running. Sun described attackers who can hoover up encrypted data today and decrypt it later as quantum hardware improves. Today's machines can't break these networks — but that gap is shrinking as the technology scales, per ZyCrypto's report of the interview.
TRON isn't just talking about it. Last month the network put post-quantum cryptography on its testnet, a concrete step toward hardening its infrastructure for whatever quantum advances land next. Post-quantum cryptography is built specifically to resist attacks from powerful quantum computers.
The stakes are straightforward. If quantum computing eventually overpowers the cryptographic methods guarding crypto assets, networks that haven't prepared will be exposed — and Sun wants TRON on the right side of that divide.
