Deutsche Telekom boss to Musk's Starlink Mobile: that'll be $200B
Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges says he takes Elon Musk's Starlink Mobile ambitions "super serious" — but reckons it takes at least $200 billion to become a real US carrier. The T-Mobile parent chief points to spectrum and 85,000 towers Musk would need to match.
Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges isn't losing sleep over Elon Musk's wireless ambitions — but he's not shrugging them off either. On an earnings call Thursday, the head of T-Mobile's parent company said he takes the Musk-owned SpaceX and its Starlink Mobile push seriously, then walked through why he thinks the math is brutal.
Höttges zeroed in on spectrum, the airwaves every carrier needs before it can sell a single phone plan. He said Musk has picked up 76 megahertz, while Deutsche Telekom holds 400. Building out a comparable position from here, he argued, would run into the triple-digit billions — and he put the floor at roughly $200 billion.
And spectrum is only the entry fee, according to Höttges. He noted a new carrier still has to construct a network from scratch, pointing to the roughly 85,000 towers his own company already has in place. Musk's response, as Höttges framed it: if he has the money, go for it.
The comments land as SpaceX has been positioning Starlink Mobile as a would-be major US carrier. Höttges didn't dismiss the threat outright — his take was less a brush-off than a price tag, and a reminder that incumbents spent decades and enormous sums stacking up the infrastructure Musk would need to match.
For T-Mobile and its parent, the subtext is simple: a satellite-to-phone challenger is coming, but the incumbent thinks the bill to compete on the ground is steep enough to keep the field crowded with the players already there.
