Borrell warns Trump still 'very dangerous for the world' after Democratic midterm rout
The EU's former top diplomat Josep Borrell says Donald Trump remains a "very dangerous person for the world" even after Democrats' decisive midterm win. In a France 24 interview, he called out Europe's "game of submission" with Washington and said Europeans are stuck paying Ukraine's bill.
Josep Borrell isn't ready to breathe easy. The EU's former top diplomat told France 24's Talking Europe that despite the Democrats' commanding midterm victory — the so-called blue tsunami — Donald Trump still holds veto power and remains a very dangerous person for the world.
Borrell knows the terrain. He spent five years as the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, steering the bloc through Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the war in Gaza. The former Spanish foreign minister now presides over CIDOB, the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs.
He was blunt about the transatlantic divide, saying Europeans have been playing the game of submission with the US. On Ukraine, he offered little hope that US funding will pick up, arguing that Europeans have effectively been paying the bill.
The Republican wipeout, in Borrell's read, sends a message to right-wing and far-right parties hoping to gain ground across Europe. With votes looming in countries like France and Spain, he called the results encouraging for the left.
Spain is the immediate test. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called a snap election for November 29, and Borrell said it's still unclear whether the gamble pays off — or whether Spain gets a far-right party in government for the first time since Francisco Franco's death in 1975.
