Qatar's PM tells US and Iran: stop chasing a perfect deal
Qatar's prime minister says Washington and Tehran will never land a "perfect" agreement — and should settle for a good one instead. The message landed the same day Qatar's emir phoned President Trump about Doha's mediation push, as Iran weighs a nuclear proposal on the table.
Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, delivered a blunt message Friday: the United States and Iran are not going to reach a flawless agreement. His advice, per his statement, is to stop chasing one. Washington and Tehran should instead accept a good deal, he said.
The timing is no accident. Earlier Friday, Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani spoke by phone with President Donald Trump, with the two covering the latest international efforts — specifically Doha's work mediating between Iran and the US.
There is something concrete to mediate. The Times of Israel reported Friday, citing a US official, that Tehran is reviewing options to curb its nuclear program to move negotiations forward. Qatari mediators floated the proposal to the Iranian team during last week's talks, according to that report. It does not call for fully dismantling the program, but it does tackle Iran's stockpiled enriched uranium — and Washington is reportedly ready to hand over significant sanctions relief if Tehran meets the demands.
Other threads are pulling at the same table. The Telegraph reported Friday, citing an Iranian official, that Russia and Iran are discussing a supply of advanced S-400 air defense systems to Tehran, with Iranian officials optimistic the long-awaited delivery could finally happen. The IRGC separately said it intercepted and destroyed a US MQ-1 reconnaissance drone over Qeshm Island in southern Iran, according to Fars News Agency — which the IRGC described as the 16th MQ-1 it has downed.
Back in Washington, Senator Elizabeth Warren said Friday she would team up with any Republicans listening to the American people on ending the war with Iran. In a post on X she wrote, end the war, lower costs. Warren added that if Congressional Republicans won't join Democrats to deliver relief for working families, Democrats must do it without them — days after her party swept the midterms and took majorities in both chambers.
So the pitch from Doha is simple: the perfect deal is a mirage, and the window is open now. With a nuclear proposal in Iranian hands, sanctions relief on the table and a fresh US Congress about to be seated, the pressure to take the good deal is only getting louder.
