ARK's Valente Tallies $8.5B in Crypto Stolen During 2026
ARK Invest research head Lorenzo Valente estimates about $8.5 billion in crypto assets were stolen in 2026 through Oct. 30 — 0.33% of the year's average market cap. He says hacking losses have averaged 0.24% of market cap yearly since 2018, a rate he calls roughly 14 times worse than U.S. bank fraud.
ARK Invest's digital assets research head, Lorenzo Valente, has put a number on the damage: roughly $8.5 billion in crypto stolen in 2026 through Oct. 30. That equals 0.33% of the year's average market capitalization, per his tally.
Zoom out and the pattern looks stubborn rather than shocking. Since 2018, annual hacking losses have averaged 0.24% of crypto's market cap, Valente said. This year's figure is running hotter than that long-run average, though the final total depends on what happens in the last two months of the year.
Valente's favorite comparison is the traditional banking system. He pegged U.S. bank fraud losses at 1.7 basis points of deposits — and said the crypto theft rate comes in about 14 times higher. It's a striking split, but it isn't apples to apples: crypto losses are measured against market capitalization, bank fraud against deposits. The point is the difference in rates, not a straight dollar-for-dollar matchup.
The real-world kicker, per Valente, is who ends up paying. Theft doesn't stay inside the hacked protocol — it can filter down to users through trading and asset-custody costs, he argued. In his view, that drag also eats into how competitive crypto networks can be against the systems they're trying to replace.
The takeaway for holders: security isn't just a headline risk, it's a recurring line item. Valente's numbers suggest the bill has been remarkably consistent for nearly a decade — and 2026 is shaping up as another expensive year.
