Amazon orders 3,000 electric trucks from Tata in India's biggest EV freight play
Tata Motors will build 3,000 electric trucks for Amazon's India delivery network, the largest electric truck deployment the country has seen. The Tata Ultra E.7 rigs will haul freight between warehouses across cities and national freight corridors, pushing Amazon's electrification beyond last-mile vans.
Tata Motors will supply Amazon with 3,000 electric trucks for its delivery network in India, the Indian automaker announced. Once they're rolling, it'll be the biggest electric truck deployment the country has seen. It also pushes Amazon's Indian electrification well past the last-mile vans it's been leaning on so far.
The workhorse here is a version of the Tata Ultra E.7, a 7.5-tonne straight truck. It runs a 240 kW (about 320 hp) electric motor off a 96 kWh LFP battery pack. Tata claims a loaded range of up to 130 km per charge, with DC fast-charging to keep them topped up between runs.
These aren't porch-drop vans. The trucks will haul goods between warehouse facilities, which means crossing cities and running India's national freight corridors. That's a harder nut to crack than last-mile delivery, and Amazon's own executive says so.
"Electrifying our logistics and transportation network is an important part of Amazon's goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040," said Abhinav Singh, Amazon's VP of Operations for APAC, Middle East, Africa and Turkey. He noted the company already has more than 15,000 EVs operating across 500-plus cities in India, and says the Tata tie-up is the start of scaling electric trucking from intracity routes onto major freight corridors.
India's government is cheering it on. Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy said the deal shows "sustained demand from a nationwide logistics network met by electric trucks manufactured in India," and pledged continued support through the PM E-DRIVE program.
For Tata, it's a flagship order that validates its electric commercial lineup. For India, it's a serious jolt to a freight fleet that's barely begun to plug in — and cleaner air for everyone downwind of it.
