Amazon boots Grubhub, hands Prime food delivery to Uber Eats
Amazon just made Uber Eats its official restaurant delivery partner for Prime members in the US, cutting Grubhub loose after four years. Prime members can order through Amazon.com and the Amazon Shopping app with no Uber account and no delivery fee on orders over $25. Grubhub's deal ends today.
Amazon has picked Uber Eats as its official restaurant delivery partner for Prime members in the United States, ending its commercial deal with Grubhub. Under the partnership announced Thursday, Prime members can order food straight from Amazon.com and the Amazon Shopping app. They won't need to create an Uber account, and there's no delivery fee on orders above $25.
The Grubhub commercial agreement that gave Prime members access to Grubhub+ expires Thursday, an Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch. The spokesperson said Amazon continuously evaluates its third-party offers, and that the review turned up a chance to deliver a better restaurant delivery experience for members.
To get people clicking, Amazon and Uber are dangling $20 off a first order of $25 or more during the first two weeks. The move also hands Prime another perk to justify that annual membership fee. And it tightens an already sprawling Amazon-Uber relationship that spans cloud computing, Zoox robotaxis and Uber Eats tucked inside Amazon's AI-powered Alexa+ assistant.
The split closes a once-cozy chapter. Amazon first shook hands with Grubhub in 2022, giving Prime members a free Grubhub+ subscription. Two years later it widened the commercial agreement into an ongoing free Grubhub+ offer for Prime members, and separately struck a deal with Grubhub's then-owner Just Eat Takeaway.com to lift its equity stake in the delivery company by as much as 18%.
That performance-based agreement was set to renew annually and could have handed Amazon warrants for an even bigger slice of Grubhub. Months later, Just Eat Takeaway announced plans to sell Grubhub to Wonder. According to Just Eat Takeaway's annual report, Amazon elected in December 2024 to cash out its outstanding exercisable warrants. The commercial partnership rolled on anyway — until now.
Grubhub could not be reached before publication. TechCrunch said it will update the article if the company responds.
