After Binance's $6.34B Breach, Campbell Urges 24-Hour Rule for Big Crypto Transfers
Austin Campbell, founder of Zero Knowledge Group, wants billion-dollar crypto transfers to face a mandatory 24-hour delay. He pitched the idea after Binance's $6.34 billion hot-wallet breach. The exchange rebuilt its systems but added no transfer delay or cap.
Austin Campbell, founder and managing partner of Zero Knowledge Group, is pushing for a 24-hour clock on billion-dollar crypto transfers, according to tokenpost.com. He floated the idea in a conversation recorded Nov. 2, using a $1 billion transfer as his example. The rule would run automatically under protocol, with no human deciding whether to approve each move.
Campbell argues crypto has focused hard on technical security while giving short shrift to financial risk. His proposal lands after Binance's Oct. 29 hot-wallet breach. Binance put the damage at about $6.34 billion in digital assets. That figure is not a final net-loss number.
Binance detailed the incident in a Nov. 3 account. An attacker abused the exchange's internal wallet signing service. Compromised engineers' machines also played a role, according to Binance.
Binance says it has rebuilt the wallet system that was hit. It also tightened device controls and strengthened risk controls for its wallet service. But the published fixes do not include a transfer delay or cap. Some security measures remain confidential, the exchange said.
Campbell's clock idea isn't on Binance's list of changes. The exchange hasn't said whether it would consider anything like it. For now, the proposal is just that—a suggestion from a crypto veteran watching a $6.34 billion hole.
