Zoomlion's 1,600 hp hybrid tractor muscles into the spotlight as world's most powerful
Zoomlion unveiled the 9DX, a 1,600-horsepower hybrid tractor it calls the world's most powerful, at China's big agricultural machinery expo. The 800V diesel-electric rig packs 7,200 Nm of torque and a four-track tank drive built for giant farms that still want diesel-level pulling power.
Zoomlion rolled into this week's China International Agricultural Machinery Exhibition with a monster: the 9DX, a hybrid tractor the company bills as the world's most powerful at more than 1,600 horsepower. It's a hybrid diesel-electric rig aimed squarely at the biggest industrial farming operations — the kind that aren't ready to ditch diesel entirely but want smaller fuel bills and fewer fumes.
The hardware is absurd in the best way. An 800V hybrid electric powertrain pairs with a continuously variable transmission for a peak 7,200 Nm (about 5,300 lb-ft) of torque, and Zoomlion's four-track tank-drive system rides on in-house 762 mm (30-inch) wide tracks built to spread all that weight for maximum grip and minimum soil compaction. Top speed lands at 40 km/h, and it'll hold that across grades and slopes up to 12 degrees.
There's muscle for the implements too. Zoomlion says the 9DX's hydraulic system pushes 636 liters per minute of flow (roughly 170 GPM), enough to drive ultra-wide seeders and variable-rate fertilizer applicators. That's the pitch: conventional all-day pulling power with electric drive's instant torque and precision, plus lower operating costs and emissions on paper.
The 9DX wasn't the only machine turning heads at a show with more than 3,000 exhibitors and vendors, but the horsepower numbers made the loudest impression. AGCO's director of global electronic and electrical engineering, Nicolas Meunier, told Chinese state news agency Xinhua that the country has moved past building mostly low-horsepower tractors and now turns out some seriously large machines.
Zoomlion is staying quiet on final specs and battery details. The company has developed an 800V modular battery pack system for other equipment that scales from 140 to 800 kWh, while its top-shelf tractors use an agricultural version of Cummins' 15-liter turbodiesel. Which combination lands in the 9DX — and at what price — remains unanswered.
The reveal caps what looks like another record year for Zoomlion, which is riding strong early export quarters into Germany, Australia, and the UAE. For now, the 9DX stands as a statement piece: proof that hybrid drivetrains can go big, not just green.
