White House Scraps Star-Studded Tech Panel as AI Stocks Wobble
The Trump administration called off Friday's meeting of its top science and tech advisory panel, packed with names like Jensen Huang, Mark Zuckerberg and Lisa Su. The cancellation lands a day after tech shares slid hard on fears Democrats in Congress will slow AI — and that the AI spending spree won't pay off.
The White House pulled the plug on Friday's gathering of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, an outside panel that counsels President Donald Trump, according to an Energy Department spokesperson. No reason was given. The White House didn't respond to questions about the postponement.
The guest list was a who's-who of the AI boom: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, AMD CEO Lisa Su, Oracle CTO Larry Ellison and Andreessen Horowitz co-founder Marc Andreessen. Venture capitalist David Sacks and White House tech adviser Michael Kratsios serve as co-chairs.
Timing is everything. Tech stocks sold off dramatically Thursday as investors fretted that a new Democrat-controlled Congress will slow artificial intelligence development — and that the enormous capital spending behind AI buildouts won't deliver the returns to match. That market turbulence has put Silicon Valley executives and Washington policymakers on high alert over the sector.
The Energy Department's meeting page briefly flashed November 13 as a replacement date, then the agency emailed out a retraction. So for now, there's no new date on the books.
When the meeting was first announced, the panel was billed as an advisory arm to Trump's new AI task force, dubbed the Super Intelligence Task Force — a mix of cabinet officials, Trump appointees and White House staff. Super intelligence happens to be the president's preferred shorthand for AI.
