Wall Street dropped $3T in one session, more than all crypto is worth
Wall Street just logged one of its ugliest days in years. The S&P 500 shed roughly $3 trillion in a single Thursday session, a one-day bloodbath bigger than the entire crypto market's value. Nasdaq names lost another $2.5 trillion, and every single rebound attempt got sold.
The S&P 500 lost about $3 trillion in market capitalization during Thursday's session, according to The Kobeissi Letter, which works out to roughly $750 billion an hour from the opening bell. Dow Jones Market Data independently pegged the damage near $2.9 trillion, the largest single-day wipeout on record for the index's constituents. Nasdaq companies dropped another $2.5 trillion, while the Magnificent Seven alone shed just over $1 trillion.
Selling was relentless. Analysts at Kobeissi counted at least five intraday rebound attempts across the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, including one rally of 1.7%, and every one of them was sold. The S&P 500 failed to print a single positive one-hour candle all day. The Nasdaq 100 closed down about 6.4%, and after-hours futures stretched the 12-hour decline to 7.1%, leaving the S&P 500 roughly $5 trillion below its October peak.
Here's the part crypto watchers will chew on. CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap put the entire crypto market at somewhere between $2.55 trillion and $2.65 trillion, with Bitcoin holding about 60% of it. So the $2.9 trillion to $3 trillion vaporized from US stocks in one session topped the value of every BTC, ETH, XRP, BNB, stablecoin, altcoin and meme coin combined. The digital asset market also fell hard for its size, though it remains a fraction of its older siblings.
Kobeissi argued the collapse looked more technical than fundamental. Worries about AI profitability, capital expenditure and potentially tighter regulation had already rattled investors, and record leverage turned a wobble into a stampede once sentiment flipped. Leveraged ETFs in the US pulled in roughly $15 billion in October, the biggest rolling-month inflow in at least two years.
The mood flip was whiplash fast, arriving just a day after a post-election relief rally. Kobeissi's takeaway was blunt: this session will be referenced for years to come.
