Vitalik Buterin: Exchanges Must Go 'Bunker Mode' and Survive, Not Win
Vitalik Buterin says crypto exchanges should stop chasing market share and start surviving. The Ethereum co-founder told Moneycontrol that platforms need "bunker mode" security for the next two years, after a Binance breach drained roughly $6.3 billion across ten blockchains.
Buterin's message to exchanges is blunt: winning can wait. Speaking to Moneycontrol while in India for Devcon 8, the Ethereum co-founder said trading platforms and financial firms should spend the next two years in what he called bunker mode, protecting customer funds instead of fighting for market share. In his words, the main responsibility for the next two years is not to win but to survive.
The warning lands weeks after the October 29 Binance breach, which crypto.news reported as a compromise of the exchange's wallet infrastructure. Roughly $6.3 billion in crypto was moved across ten networks, with blockchain investigators tracing the unauthorized transfers chain by chain. Binance later tied the intrusion to fraudulent job interviews, malicious software and compromised employee systems that handed attackers credentials into its wallet signing setup.
Buterin said the danger has moved. Smart contract hacks have fallen by a huge amount, he noted, with the biggest incidents of the past 18 months landing instead in user interfaces and centralized components. His fix: more on-chain systems with stronger cryptographic guarantees, and he cited Binance Smart Chain as one piece of infrastructure built for that.
He saved his sharpest line for North Korea-linked crews, which have been tied to major crypto thefts including the Binance incident. Letting those losses continue, he warned, invites regulators to slap stricter security obligations on anyone holding digital assets. If you get hacked and it goes to North Korea, if you go all the way to the extreme, they should treat that as donating to North Korea, he said. South Korean regulators are already pressing domestic exchanges to tighten cold storage, withdrawal approvals and internal access controls, and Buterin's advice to holders is to use multisignature wallets and pay closer attention to how their assets are secured.
The conversation wasn't all defense. Buterin walked through Ethereum's Lean Ethereum roadmap, which leans on zero-knowledge proofs, artificial intelligence and formal verification to lift performance without sacrificing decentralization or security. AI has slashed development time, he said, to the point where work that would have taken 20 years by the standards of five years ago is now within reach. Ethereum's base layer will stick with conservative hash-based cryptography, while Layer 2 networks focus on applications that go beyond basic transaction scaling.
He named high-performance decentralized finance and privacy as the most promising Layer 2 territory, pointing to Lighter and Aztec. Enterprise use cases, such as verifying supply chain, healthcare or manufacturing records without exposing sensitive data, could become another major category. Institutional adoption is already showing up in tokenized real-world assets on Ethereum, which have grown over the past 18 months; Buterin expects identity checks to stick around, but says blockchain-based systems can cut down the number of intermediaries able to restrict access to funds.
