US Debt Blasts Past $40.6 Trillion With $422B October Jump
Washington's borrowing tab keeps climbing. US federal debt surged $422 billion in October to a record $40.6 trillion, with the debt-to-GDP ratio hitting 123% — its highest mark since the 2020 pandemic peak. The Treasury also just pulled off its biggest week of bill and note auctions ever.
The US federal debt added $422 billion in October, pushing the total to a record $40.6 trillion, according to @KobeissiLetter. That works out to roughly $10 billion of new debt every single day. The account called the situation a debt crisis in full swing.
The October jump is just the latest chunk. Since July 1, the debt has swelled by $1.2 trillion, an average of about $300 billion a month. There's no sign of the pace easing.
The broader picture looks just as heavy. America's total public debt-to-GDP ratio has climbed to 123%, the highest level since the 2020 pandemic peak. In plain terms, the country owes more than it produces in a year.
The borrowing machine was working overtime last week too. The Treasury raised a record $839 billion through auctions of Treasury bills and notes, topping the previous all-time high of $834 billion set during the same stretch in 2025. Most of that cash went straight back out the door to repay holders of maturing bills.
So the headline number keeps getting bigger, and the auctions keep getting bigger with it. For now, the trend line points one direction: up.
