UK maritime agency reports bulk carrier in incident with military forces off UAE coast
A bulk carrier tangled with "military forces" in the Gulf of Oman just 18 nautical miles off the UAE, according to Britain's UK Maritime Trade Operations. Crew status, damage and environmental fallout are all unknown. It lands in a region already bristling with US-Iran tensions.
A bulk carrier has been caught up in an incident with military forces in the Gulf of Oman, Britain's UK Maritime Trade Operations said. The vessel was roughly 18 nautical miles off the coast of the United Arab Emirates when it happened. UKMTO offered no further detail on who the forces were or what went down.
In a bare-bones statement, the agency said the status of the crew, any damage assessment and environmental impact were all unknown at the time it filed the report. No injuries, no spills, no confirmed cause — just questions.
The timing is rough. The Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman have stayed on a knife's edge through the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
Tehran has been talking loud. The Iranian Navy claimed Saturday that an oil tanker struck a sea mine in the Strait of Hormuz, catching fire and losing the ability to navigate. The Navy insisted the tanker was traveling through a prohibited area and ignoring the routes Tehran assigns.
Separately, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi claimed Saturday that Iran's military downed seven US reconnaissance drones over the past two weeks, telling press it showed nothing but the superiority of Iranian technology. Iran has previously claimed it seriously damaged or destroyed more than 200 US bases and facilities in the region.
Diplomacy is still grinding along. Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan spoke by phone about de-escalation efforts, Al Jazeera reported Saturday, with Saudi Arabia's top diplomat also speaking to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier in the week. Meanwhile the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile over Riyadh, which spokesperson Major General Turki al-Maliki said on X was launched by the Houthis.
