Trump Says Peace Is Close. The Kremlin Says: What Peace?
Donald Trump says a deal to end the war in Ukraine is 'very close.' The Kremlin isn't playing along. Asked Friday about the plan Trump touted, spokesman Dmitry Peskov gave a two-word answer: no details — as Russian strikes kept killing in Zaporizhzhia.
The Kremlin isn't buying what the White House is selling — or at least it hasn't seen the paperwork. Asked Friday about the peace agreement Donald Trump said was nearly done, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov gave reporters a flat two-word answer: no details. He wasn't describing a stage of negotiations, he was saying Moscow has none of them.
The day before, Trump stood in the White House after meeting Kirill Dmitriev, Vladimir Putin's envoy, and told the room a deal to end the war in Ukraine was 'very close.' He predicted a 'big agreement' that would stretch past Ukraine's borders and could pull in 'all of Europe.' One day later, the other side of that handshake had nothing to add.
The gap between the talk and the ground stayed wide. Ukraine's State Emergency Service said Friday that the death toll from Russian strikes on Komyshuvakha, a village in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, had climbed to 50 after rescuers pulled eight more bodies from the rubble. Search operations are still going despite repeated strike threats, the service said on Telegram. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had already condemned the attack.
Russia kept the pressure on overnight. Ukraine's Air Force reported 227 unmanned aerial vehicles launched in a single wave — Shahed-type attack drones, 86 of them rocket-propelled, plus Gerber and Parody simulator drones — flying in from Orel, Kursk, Millerovo, Prymorsko-Akhtarsk, occupied Donetsk, Gvardiyske and Chauda. Ukrainian defense forces said they intercepted part of the barrage.
Moscow described its own overnight work just as plainly. The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces hit energy facilities and naval vessels around Kyiv and Odessa, claiming a battery storage site feeding Ukrainian military industry was damaged and that a dry cargo ship carrying dual-use cargo was struck in Odessa's port. It also said Aerospace Forces dropped a FAB bomb on an electrical substation near Sumy, according to RIA Novosti — with no confirmed word on casualties or damage.
Trump has pointed to a localized ceasefire in Oleshky as a 'stepping stone for a larger peace deal,' framing the wider talks as a push for a lasting end to the war. Peskov's comment doesn't close that door. It just leaves the White House describing a deal that, so far, only one side can see.
