Tether's CEO Says 150,000 BTC. Tether's Own Books Say About 100,060
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino told a Lugano crowd the company holds "give or take 150,000" bitcoin — roughly 50,000 more than the ~100,060 BTC implied by Tether's own Q3 reserves report. He offered no wallet breakdown or timing, and the next filing will show whether the gap is real.
Tether's CEO just put a bigger number on the company's bitcoin stash than Tether's own paperwork does. Speaking at the Plan B Forum in Lugano, Switzerland, Paolo Ardoino said the stablecoin giant holds "give or take 150,000" bitcoin, according to altcoinbuzz.io. That's roughly 50,000 coins more than the ~100,060 BTC you get from dividing the numbers in Tether's own reserves report for the quarter ending 30 September.
The math isn't mysterious. Tether's report lists its Bitcoin line at $8,367,170,264 and values each coin at $83,621.23 — the Bloomberg close on 30 September. One divided by the other lands near 100,060 BTC. The report says those coins sit on-chain in wallets the company controls, and that its reserves include everything owned by Tether International, even assets held above what regulators require. If 50,000 more coins had been on those books that day, the report would be expected to show them.
Ardoino didn't say where the extra bitcoin lives or when it was bought. No wallet breakdown, no acquisition schedule. And "give or take" is fuzzy phrasing for a balance-sheet figure, so even the size of the gap is approximate. Tether has been buying since May 2023, when it pledged to steer up to 15% of net realized operating profits into bitcoin. A fatter corporate stack would fit that policy — but the policy says nothing about the timing or the location of the coins the CEO described.
The report itself only captures a single moment in time. BDO Advisory Services in Milan signed a reasonable assurance opinion dated 30 October, finding the figures fairly presented in all material respects. That opinion covers 30 September, not the months around it. Coins bought after the snapshot, or held by a group entity outside Tether International, wouldn't show up. Ardoino didn't say which — if either — applies, and no source in front of us confirms where the rest of the bitcoin is kept.
The rest of the balance sheet told its own story. Bitcoin stood at about $5.8 billion at the end of June and $8.37 billion at the end of September, though the dollar jump alone can't separate fresh purchases from bitcoin's price move over those three months.
Ardoino also used the keynote to say Tether serves more than 730 million users and adds roughly 30 million wallets a quarter. The real test comes with the next reserves report: if the bitcoin line creeps toward 150,000, the story closes itself. If it stays near 100,000 while the CEO's number stands, Tether will owe an explanation its own filings haven't given yet.
