Saudi-led coalition says it shot down Houthi missile bound for Medina
The Saudi-led coalition claims it intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile headed toward the Medina region, with spokesman Turki al-Maliki calling the launch the work of a "terrorist militia." The Houthis say they downed a Saudi spy drone over Taiz, as strikes and counterstrikes keep escalating.
The Saudi-led coalition says it knocked a ballistic missile out of the sky before it could reach the Medina region. Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki announced the intercept Thursday in a post on X, blaming what he called a "terrorist Houthi militia" for the launch. The missile flew earlier the same day, according to the coalition's account.
The Houthis had their own version of events ready. The rebels said they repelled an armed Saudi reconnaissance drone over Taiz governorate in western Yemen, a claim that surfaced before the coalition's missile announcement. Neither side's battlefield claims could be independently verified.
The strike and counterstrike pattern is nothing new. Earlier reports said the Houthis targeted Saudi Arabia's Abha International Airport and Khamis Mushait Air Base, extending their reach deep into Saudi territory. The coalition has spent years intercepting projectiles aimed at Saudi cities and infrastructure.
Ground violence in Taiz is exacting a grim toll. A Saudi military aircraft struck a home in the west of the governorate, killing seven residents, according to Iran's Tasnim news agency, which cited Yemen's Health Ministry. Two of the dead were children, and six other minors were wounded in the attack.
The exchange lands as regional tensions stay white-hot, with the Yemen conflict still drawing in outside players and spawning attacks far from the front lines. Shipping in nearby waters remains jittery too: the UK Maritime Trade Operations said a vessel was hit by two unidentified projectiles about 50 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, on November 4, with crew status and damage still unconfirmed.
For now, the coalition is framing Thursday's intercept as a defensive win, while the Houthis keep advertising their ability to strike back. With casualties mounting in Taiz and missiles still flying, neither side shows any sign of stepping off the escalator.
