Russia Says Overnight Drones Hit Kyiv Energy Site and Odessa Port Ship
Russia's Defense Ministry says its overnight drone strikes damaged a battery storage facility in the Kyiv region and hit a dry cargo ship in Odessa's port. The attacks land as US-led peace talks push forward, with Trump calling a localized ceasefire a "stepping stone" to a bigger deal.
Russia's Defense Ministry says it sent drones into Ukrainian skies overnight, targeting energy infrastructure and naval vessels in regions that include Kyiv and Odessa. The ministry announced the strikes itself on Telegram, calling them hits on military-linked targets.
According to the ministry, a battery storage facility in the Kyiv region was damaged — one it says supplied electricity to Ukrainian military-industrial complex sites. In Odessa, the ministry claims a dry cargo ship was struck while delivering what it described as dual-use cargo. No independent confirmation of the damage or any casualties has surfaced.
The overnight barrage follows an earlier strike the ministry reported near Sumy in northeastern Ukraine, where it said Aerospace Forces dropped a FAB bomb and destroyed an electrical substation. RIA Novosti carried that account. Details on casualties or the scale of the damage remain unconfirmed.
Diplomacy is running on a parallel track. President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that a localized ceasefire in Oleshky amounts to a stepping stone for a larger peace deal, crediting First Lady Melania Trump with bringing Russian and Ukrainian officials together. He said he believes the two sides are getting very close to settling the war, and mentioned meeting with Kirill Dmitriev, Putin's special envoy for foreign investment and economic cooperation.
US special envoy Jared Kushner said he held productive and substantive talks with Ukraine, NATO and European allies on security guarantees for Kyiv once the fighting ends, plus broader European security. He said the Trump administration is hunting for practical solutions to end the war and lay the groundwork for lasting peace.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said Spain will send a fresh €437 million military assistance package. After speaking with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Zelensky said the two discussed Ukraine's most urgent defense needs and briefed Sanchez on Russian strikes against critical infrastructure — noting Russia has damaged more Ukrainian locomotives this year than in all prior years of the war combined.
