Mamdani Tells Democrats to Keep 'Foot on the Gas' After Midterm Tidal Wave
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says the midterms ushered in "a new dawn in America" and Democrats must stay aggressive now that they've flipped the Senate and House. All three progressive House candidates he endorsed — including two who toppled incumbents — won Tuesday. Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer are now eyeing the top jobs in Congress.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani looked at Tuesday's results and saw a changing of the guard. "It's a realization that it's a new dawn in America," he told reporters Wednesday, saying voters had elected "a new generation of leadership." His message to his own party: don't slow down now.
Democrats didn't just hold ground — they took it. The party flipped at least seven Republican-held Senate seats, several in deep-red territory, plus dozens of House districts. That swing has Mamdani arguing Democrats can finally stop playing defense, pointing to the Republican-backed One Big Beautiful Bill Act and its cuts to SNAP and health insurance programs as the old fight.
"The offensive is delivering to make life more affordable for them," he said, framing the next two years around costs and what Americans "can feel in their wallets." It's the same affordability pitch that carried him through his 2025 mayoral run and turned him into a national progressive name.
Mamdani put his clout on the line in the primaries too, backing three progressive House candidates in deep-blue New York City districts. All three won Tuesday: Brad Lander, Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier. Lander and Avila Chevalier knocked off incumbent Democrats they had beaten in the primaries, per CBS News.
Valdez and Avila Chevalier belong to the Democratic Socialists of America, the same group as Mamdani. He says he "can't wait to count on them as partners for our affordability agenda at the federal level."
Two New Yorkers outside the party's progressive wing are angling for the top jobs in Congress come January. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced his bid for speaker Wednesday, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he expects to be elected Senate majority leader. Mamdani said he called Jeffries to congratulate him on the wins, adding the two "have a good working relationship" — and that having Washington's leaders come from his city matters. "For them, the struggles of New Yorkers are not intellectual concerns," he said.
