Kyiv Goes Dark: Russian Strikes Cripple Power, Heat and Water
Overnight Russian strikes smashed energy facilities across Kyiv and Zhytomyr, cutting electricity, heating and water across the capital. Mayor Vitali Klitschko calls the situation "extremely difficult" and won't say when services return — five people were hurt, including a 14-year-old.
Kyiv woke up Saturday running on fumes. Overnight Russian attacks damaged energy facilities in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions, knocking out electricity, heating and water across the capital, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. He offered no timeline for getting any of it back.
The human toll: at least five people were injured in the city, among them a 14-year-old, with two of the wounded hospitalized. The strike also clipped the Northern Bridge, which is now shut in both directions, per Klitschko's Telegram posts.
Russia isn't hiding its hand. Its defense ministry said it hit military-industrial, energy and transport infrastructure in Kyiv and the surrounding region, describing the operation to RIA Novosti as a "massive strike" using high-precision ground-based weapons and long-range attack drones.
The damage spread past the grid. Kyiv's military administration said a fire broke out in a non-residential building and a kindergarten in the Solomenskyi district took damage, according to the administration. Ukrainian outlet Suspilne News reported repeated explosions thudding across the city.
It's the latest blow in a bruising week for Ukraine's energy infrastructure, with Russian strikes already triggering severe power and water outages in Kyiv over the past several days.
Meanwhile, the diplomatic track is suddenly loud. President Donald Trump told reporters he believes Russia and Ukraine want to end the war for the first time, calling it a potential "very big" settlement that would involve all of Europe. He said meetings are set for Monday and Tuesday, with more calls lined up this weekend.
