Japan's real wages climb 2.2% for ninth straight month, keeping BOJ hike in play
Japan's paychecks are beating prices again. Real wages rose 2.2% in September, the ninth straight monthly gain, while nominal pay notched its fastest jump since 1997. That keeps the Bank of Japan on track to hike rates — possibly as soon as next month, analysts say.
Japan's paychecks keep outrunning prices. Real, inflation-adjusted wages climbed 2.2% in September from a year earlier — the ninth straight monthly gain — government data showed, handing the Bank of Japan fresh ammunition for another rate hike. The pace picked up from August's revised 1.6% increase.
The headline number got a big assist from nominal pay. Average total cash earnings jumped 4.6%, reaching 311,409 yen ($1,972.94) — the fastest rise since January 1997, and up from August's revised 3.9%. Regular base salaries rose 3.7%, roughly matching August's 3.8%, and a labour ministry official pointed to steady base-pay growth this year as a key driver behind the improving real wage picture.
The fine print is messier. Overtime pay growth cooled, coming in at 3.6% after August's revised 4.9%. Special payments — mostly volatile one-off bonuses — spiked 32.6% following a revised 1.8% gain in August, but the ministry said that surge reflected a statistical quirk rather than workers actually pocketing bigger bonuses.
Inflation used to calculate the real wage figure accelerated to 2.4% in September from 2.2% in August, though it stayed well under the 3.4% recorded a year earlier. Broader price pressure isn't easing: core inflation in Tokyo blew past the central bank's 2% target in October, according to data released last week, a reading that hardened the case for more tightening.
Markets are already leaning that way. Many analysts expect the BOJ's next rate increase as soon as next month, with nine months of real wage gains supplying the kind of evidence policymakers have said they want to see. The yen traded at 157.84 per dollar.
