Iran's IRGC dismisses US 'Iron Gate' border crackdown as wordplay
Iran's Revolutionary Guard is laughing off Washington's new Iron Gate task force, saying the US can't squeeze Tehran into economic collapse through a blockade. The IRGC's pushback comes after CENTCOM launched the force to choke off weapons and sanctioned goods crossing Iran's land borders and the Caspian Sea.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is not rattled by the Pentagon's latest pressure campaign. IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebi said Sunday that the United States will not hit its targets through a planned land blockade of Iran, calling the whole thing theater.
"The 'Iron Gate' plan is merely a play on words, and the Americans cannot achieve their goal through this," Mohebi said, describing that goal as applying severe economic pressure to collapse and disintegrate the Iranian economy. He also pointed back at past US forecasts, noting Washington once predicted Tehran would "suffer economic collapse within two weeks" — a call that never came true.
The name at the center of the spat belongs to US Central Command, which announced it had stood up a new task force called Iron Gate. According to CENTCOM, the force is meant to stop Iran from moving advanced weapons, dual-use technologies and other sanctioned materials across its land borders and the Caspian Sea, and to cut off what it called "illegal" revenue streams.
So the two sides are telling very different stories about the same plan. Washington frames Iron Gate as a hard barrier against weapons and cash flows; Tehran frames it as branding with no bite behind it. Mohebi's comments suggest Iran expects the pressure to land softly, at least in its own telling.
What happens next hinges on whether the task force actually tightens movement across Iran's borders and the Caspian corridor. For now, the IRGC's message is simple: the US has made this promise before, and Iran is still standing.
