Gate Pitches Proof of Security Standard After Binance Hack Tests Reserves
Gate wants crypto exchanges to answer a tougher question than Proof of Reserves: if hackers emptied your hot wallet, would users still get paid? Its new PoSEC standard says yes, pointing to cold storage covering 104.58% of user assets. CoinDesk flagged the push as a response to the Binance hack.
Gate is rolling out a new standard it calls Proof of Security, or PoSEC, and it's aimed straight at a gap the Binance hack left exposed. According to CoinDesk, the exchange is pitching the framework as a step beyond Proof of Reserves, which has become crypto's go-to transparency tool. The core question PoSEC asks is blunt: if attackers drained an exchange's entire hot wallet, would customers still be covered?
Gate's answer is yes. The exchange says its cold storage holds 104.58% of user assets, meaning customer balances sit above the 100% line even before hot wallet funds enter the picture. That surplus is the whole point of the pitch — reserves prove assets exist, but they don't prove those assets survive a breach.
The timing isn't subtle. Proof of Reserves became an industry ritual after a wave of collapses and hacks, with exchanges publishing Merkle-tree snapshots to show they hold what they owe. But the Binance hack, per CoinDesk, showed the limits of that approach: a snapshot can be accurate and still leave users exposed if the wrong wallet gets hit.
Gate is now betting that security, not just solvency, becomes the next benchmark exchanges get judged on. Whether rivals adopt PoSEC or build their own version is the open question. For now, the standard lives on one exchange's numbers and one very pointed hypothetical.
