French bank recovers some funds after €100M cyber raid
Crédit Mutuel Arkéa is clawing back money after hackers siphoned more than €100 million and converted it into cryptocurrency, a senior official said Friday. The French bank says customer funds were untouched, and investigators are tracing the breach.
Crédit Mutuel Arkéa has already recovered part of the money stolen in a cyberattack that surfaced Wednesday, according to Daniel Baal, president of the Confédération Nationale du Crédit Mutuel. Baal told France 5 on Friday that some funds were back, but he did not say how much.
Hackers broke into the French regional bank and moved more than €100 million into cryptocurrency, the bank said. Customer money was not touched. Le Télégramme reported that the exact amount taken is believed to be €118 million.
Baal described a relentless threat environment, saying the bank faces cyberattacks every day and that nearly all are stopped. In this case, he said he could not determine whether the attackers were French or foreign.
France’s specialist anti-cybercrime unit is investigating. The breach landed during a week of cyberattacks on supermarkets in at least nine European countries, with the European Union warning of a deliberate effort to disrupt food supplies. Russia, which has faced repeated accusations of cyberattacks on Europe, denied involvement.
