EVgo switches on its first Tesla Supercharger site, starting near Chicago
EVgo just opened its first Tesla Supercharger station, a 12-stall site on Chicago's South Side, kicking off a plan to plant hundreds of Supercharger stalls across the U.S. The hardware comes from Tesla's Supercharger for Business program, but EVgo owns the stations and sets the price.
EVgo cut the ribbon on its first Tesla Supercharger location, a 12-stall station at 3145 South Ashland Avenue in Chicago's Riverside Square & River's Edge development, right next to a grocery store. It's the opening shot in a bigger play: hundreds of Supercharger stalls rolling out across the United States, mostly at grocery-anchored Regency Centers properties where drivers can shop or run errands while the car juices up.
The stalls run on Tesla's Magic Dock, so both NACS and CCS vehicles plug in natively — no adapter required. Peak power hits 325 kW, and pricing lands between $0.25 and $0.35 per kWh depending on the hour, with Tesla and non-Tesla drivers paying the same rate. The site also shows up in Tesla's in-car navigation and Trip Planner, handing EVgo instant visibility to millions of Tesla owners already on the road.
The timing tracks the market. Illinois EV registrations have climbed nearly 60 percent over the past two years, and EVgo says charging demand across its wider network has grown more than 700 percent in three years. Grocery-anchored retail stops, the company reasons, fit how people actually use their cars.
Under Tesla's Supercharger for Business program, EVgo gets V4 stalls and cabinets with a solid uptime record, Magic Dock's dual-standard compatibility, longer cables and operational support. EVgo still owns the stations and controls pricing, so it pockets the upside while leaning on Tesla's proven gear.
The payoff for EVgo is expansion with less risk and, it hopes, a doubled addressable market as more automakers adopt NACS. For drivers, it means fewer adapters rattling around the trunk and a denser fast-charging network at the places they already park.
