Eurex and SocGen drag tokenized collateral into the old rulebooks
Eurex Clearing wants digital securities inside the same clearing framework, risk model and rulebook it already runs for traditional instruments. Societe Generale's prime services arm took $10 million in tokenized US Treasuries as collateral on Canton. Zodia Custody's Richard Clark says the plumbing only works if custody and settlement stop being separate steps.
Eurex Clearing laid out plans on Nov. 2 to fold traditional and native digital instruments into a single clearing framework, one rulebook and one risk model. Under the arrangement, digital securities — including issuances by the European Stability Mechanism — could trade in Eurex Repo's GC Pooling segment, clear through Eurex Clearing and count as margin collateral. Participants would reach those instruments through the clearing relationships and infrastructure they already use, and the securities would become eligible for the ECB GC Pooling basket. Eurex says the point is to keep existing liquidity pools intact rather than splitting activity across separate traditional and digital venues.
Societe Generale moved on the same day. Its Prime Services and Clearing division accepted $10 million in tokenized US Treasuries on Canton, according to the bank's Nov. 2 statement, using assets created through the soft launch of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation's Tokenisation Service. The Treasury representations went onchain and were booked inside the bank's existing back-office and collateral systems, under its own governance, risk and control framework. It builds on Societe Generale's first US tokenized bond issuance on Canton in November 2025 and its appointment as a network Super Validator in May 2026.
Salim Nemouchi, the bank's global head of Prime Services, framed the trade as wiring tokenized securities into the financing markets where clients actually want to use them.
Richard Clark, CEO of Zodia Custody, told crypto.news that institutions piling into tokenized collateral need custody and settlement that function as one system, because the assets never stop moving. His argument: collateral only earns its keep when it can shift in real time while staying segregated right up to settlement — and any institution forced to pull it out of custody early to put it to work inherits the exact risk custody existed to remove. Zodia pushes that pitch through Interchange, its institutional settlement network, which it says lets clients trade, borrow, lend and deploy digital assets across venues while they stay in custody until settlement. That assessment comes from a custody provider selling the settlement and collateral workflows in question.
Clark said the old architecture of separate stages no longer holds. Traditional markets could run custody, settlement and collateral management as distinct steps because assets settled on a fixed timetable, he said, but once collateral moves around the clock those steps stop being separate at all. Tokenizing an asset, he added, does nothing to lower the standard it has to meet — which is why the clearing houses and banks moving first are bringing tokenized collateral under rulebooks and risk models they already apply.
Regulators are circling with the same instinct. The Bank of England's consultation covers tokenized versions of collateral already eligible under its proposed CCP Rulebook, without carving out a separate regime, and its draft expectations span liquidity, valuation, settlement finality, operational resilience and safeguarding — drawing a line between contractual settlement finality and legal protection against a transfer being unwound after insolvency. In the EU, ESMA's collateral review asks whether clearing houses can access, transfer and convert tokenized assets into liquidity when a clearing member defaults. ESMA takes responses until Jan. 15, 2027, and plans to weigh the evidence in the first quarter.
