EU cuts €4.36B check for Ukraine from its €90B loan pot
The European Commission wired €4.36 billion to Ukraine on Thursday, carving the money out of a €90 billion loan. Most of it — €3.7 billion — covers Kyiv's 2026 financing needs, with €658 million earmarked for defense. Ursula von der Leyen says EU support stays unwavering as Ukraine heads into a fifth wartime winter.
The cash landed Thursday. The European Commission said it had disbursed €4.36 billion to Ukraine, drawn from a €90 billion loan package, announcing the move in a statement the same day.
The bulk of the tranche — €3.7 billion — forms the second instalment of Ukraine's financing needs under macro-financial assistance agreed for 2026. That slice comes out of an €8.35 billion total set aside for the year, leaving further payments still owed under the arrangement. The remaining €658 million is tagged for the defense portion of the loan.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen framed the transfer around the calendar as much as the cash. Russia keeps up its relentless attacks, she said, and Ukraine is about to begin its fifth wartime winter. She added that the EU's backing remains unwavering even as efforts to secure a just and lasting peace carry on.
The disbursement keeps Brussels' funding pipeline moving into a season when Ukraine's energy grid and frontline logistics have historically come under heavy strain. With the first two 2026 instalments of the MFA now out the door, the rest of the €8.35 billion hangs on the same schedule.
