Bitget Opens a Custody Door: Keep Assets in a Bank, Trade on Its Rails
Bitget launched the Open Custody Network, letting eligible users keep assets with banks and institutional custodians while still trading spot, margin and futures on the exchange. CEO Gracy Chen says it challenges the assumption that assets must sit on an exchange to be traded.
Bitget is betting you'd rather keep your crypto in a bank than hand it over to an exchange. The Seychelles-based trading platform unveiled the Open Custody Network (OCN), a system that links banks and institutional-grade custodians directly to Bitget's trading rails for eligible users, according to invezz.com.
The pitch is simple: custody stays with a provider you pick, while execution happens on Bitget. OCN uses asset mirroring to wire independent custody into the exchange's spot, margin and futures markets, so traders can work the order book without parking their coins on the venue itself.
That's a direct swipe at the standard centralized exchange model, where moving assets onto a platform has long been the price of admission to trade them. Bitget calls it a structural flaw — custody and execution crammed into one place. OCN instead bundles custody independence, banking-grade security, capital efficiency and connected liquidity into a single setup.
Institutions get the sharper end of the deal. Market makers and asset managers can spread custody concentration risk while still deploying externally held assets across trading strategies — a neat trick for desks that need exposure without single-venue exposure.
CEO Gracy Chen didn't mince words in the announcement. "We challenge the assumption that users must place their assets in an exchange's custody to access its trading capabilities," she said, summing up the company's new tagline: "Assets in Bank, Tradings on Bitget." She framed it as the first time users can chase top-tier liquidity and capital efficiency without giving up control of their holdings.
The obvious question now is which banks and custodians actually sign on, and how fast OCN's eligible-user list grows. Bitget is selling choice and capital efficiency — the market will decide whether traders trust a split setup over the familiar, if uncomfortable, one-stop shop.
