Bitcoin Whiplashes as October Jobs Blow Past Forecasts
The US economy added 165,000 jobs in October, smashing expectations of about 59,000, and unemployment slipped to 4.1%. Bitcoin dumped to $75,200 from $76,000 on the hot print before recovering most of the drop, one day after a slide to a multi-month low of $75,100.
Bitcoin can't catch a break. The October US jobs report landed far hotter than anyone expected Friday, and BTC's first reaction was a sharp drop to $75,200 from $76,000 — before buyers jumped back in and largely erased the slide.
The numbers were big. The US economy added 165,000 jobs last month, according to CNBC, while expectations sat around 59,000. The unemployment rate also ticked down to 4.1%, beating the 4.2% forecast, and September's tally got revised up by another 31,000 jobs.
Why does a strong jobs report hurt? Because it tells the Federal Reserve the economy can handle tighter monetary policy without cracking — a classic headwind for risk-on assets like crypto. Bitcoin has been twitchy around these releases for months, tanking after August's print and ripping higher after September's.
The whiplash caps a brutal stretch for BTC. It had just ripped to $81,000 on the post-election rally before collapsing to a multi-month low of $75,100, then clawing its way back to $76,000. Friday's dip briefly threatened a repeat of that ugly move.
There's a longer-term story underneath the volatility. Nicole Bachaud, a labor economist at ZipRecruiter, said before the release that the US won't need to add many jobs over the long haul because there simply aren't enough people to fill them. An aging workforce, decades of low birth rates and a sharp drop in immigration are all shrinking the pool of prime-age workers, she noted.
For now, traders are left watching whether Bitcoin can hold its footing after another round of macro whiplash — and whether the next data drop brings more of the same.
