Bitcoin's eCash fork is live, and self-custody hodlers got free ECX
Paul Sztorc's eCash network forked Bitcoin at block 973,728 on Oct. 29, handing self-custodying holders an equal pile of the new ECX token. The chain runs on Drivechains with five sidechains live, but trading is thin, exchanges are scarce and LayerTwo Labs warns holders to move ECX before BTC.
Paul Sztorc's long-promised Bitcoin fork is no longer a promise. The eCash network went live Oct. 29, forking Bitcoin at block 973,728 and handing every self-custodying holder an equal stack of the new chain's native token, ECX. According to LayerTwo Labs, the company behind the project, claiming is dead simple — if you held your own keys at that exact block, the same amount of ECX is sitting there waiting for you right now.
Sztorc, the founder of LayerTwo Labs and the man behind the Bitcoin Drivechain proposals BIP300 and BIP301, built eCash as a rebuke to Bitcoin's slow-and-steady culture. He tells Magazine the ecosystem needs to 'actively sabotage the degrowth policies killing Bitcoin,' describing the complacency and what he calls cult-like toxicity as the thing holding the original chain back. The core feature, Drivechains, lets developers spin up independent sidechains with their own rules — payments, privacy, digital assets, prediction markets — without touching the base-layer protocol, and lets miners collect extra fees. Five sidechains shipped with mainnet: BitNames, BitAssets, Thunder, Truthcoin and zSide, with the quantum-resistant Photon and a decentralized exchange called CoinShift still to come.
Free money comes with homework. Because the two chains share transaction history, an ordinary BTC spend can be replayed on the eCash network, so LayerTwo Labs warns holders to never move their Bitcoin first. Move the ECX instead, then the BTC, using a wallet that supports the fork and can cleanly split the two. Anyone who left coins on a centralized exchange is, in the company's words, at that exchange's mercy on distribution — worth checking before assuming anything showed up.
Trading is live in spots. NeoXEX says it switched on native ECX deposits, withdrawals and trading on Oct. 29 with ECX/USDT, ECX/USDC and ECX/BTC pairs. CoinW has said it plans to distribute ECX to eligible Bitcoin holders, though deposits, withdrawals and trading are still to be announced. On Solana, the decentralized exchange Orca lets users swap USDC for wrapped ECX through a liquidity pool — exposure to the token, but not native ECX trading on the eCash network.
The price picture is thin. CoinMarketCap showed ECX at $32.63 with roughly $355,000 in 24-hour volume as of Nov. 5, while CoinGecko listed it as a preview with no price and no tracked markets, and data provider Kaiko says it doesn't track the token at all. LayerTwo Labs says early trading bounced between $40 and $50 but didn't hand over order book depth or volume figures, pointing to the Orca pool's total value locked instead. Sztorc brushes off the liquidity chatter: if the fork echoes even a fraction of Bitcoin Cash's early run, he says, liquidity will be staggering — and anyone nervous can just sit on their coins. 'Otherwise,' he says, 'you're welcome to take your free money and leave.'
What happens next comes down to usage. Sztorc says ECX's value will hinge on whether developers build applications people actually pay for, with paying customers and transaction fee revenue as the project's scoreboard for year one. He's also unbothered by the long-running critique that miners could collude to loot sidechain funds, arguing that anyone who believes miners would torch billion-dollar operations for a quick theft on an L2 shouldn't trust Bitcoin's base layer either. Bitcoiners, meanwhile, get a new asset — and a reminder to check their local tax rules on fork distributions before filing.
