Bitcoin Holds Near $76,000 as Exchange and Stablecoin Issuers Freeze Billions
Bitcoin is camped near $76,000 after sliding from roughly $81,000 over a bruising week. Binance says it will cover all customer losses and has frozen $3 billion of affected assets, while Tether and Circle locked up nearly $1.57 billion and more than $800 million respectively. Wall Street's tech selloff and a hawkish Fed voice are adding pressure.
Bitcoin is hovering around $76,000, down from roughly $81,000 a week ago. The largest token's market cap now sits at $1.520 trillion, with dominance just under 60% — a split altcoin market beneath it. There's no scheduled crypto catalyst in the next 24 hours, so the question is simple: does $76,000 hold?
The cleanup from this week's damage is already big money. Binance, which counts 335 million registered users and about $162.8 billion in assets under custody per its 2025 annual report, said it will cover all customer losses and froze $3 billion of the affected assets. Tether froze nearly $1.57 billion tied to the incident, and Circle froze more than $800 million. Ethereum absorbed the heaviest hit at $3.8 billion in losses, according to analytics firm Elliptic.
The macro backdrop isn't helping. Democrats won majorities in both the House and the Senate in the midterms, with some races still uncalled, reshaping expectations around tech regulation and AI spending. Trillions in value came off major tech firms across the US, Europe and Asia. The Nasdaq is in a correction, down about 12% over the past month, though it still managed a 1.2% rally on Friday while the S&P 500 added 0.3% and the Dow dropped 479 points.
Rates are lurking too. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly said the central bank will likely need to raise rates further to wrestle down too-high inflation. Against that, the big tokens are a mixed bag: Ethereum near $2,250, BNB close to $700, XRP well below its $1.20 support. SOL, TRX, HYPE and LINK are slightly green; XMR, DOGE, ADA, BCH, NEAR and UNI are red.
A few names bucked the trend. ZEC jumped more than 4% to $1,325 and QNT climbed 5.3% to $200, while Rain and CC each shed roughly 5%. Monero sat near $612, down from $623 a day earlier but still up more than 120% from its February low of about $276.
On-chain activity cooled right along with price. Uniswap V3 processed $692.0 million in 24-hour DEX volume as of 13:01 UTC on 7 November, down 60% from the day before and 68.8% over seven days, per DefiLlama. One gauge is missing: US spot crypto ETF flows for 4 to 6 November couldn't be verified, so the usual daily demand read isn't in the picture. All eyes on Monday's open.
