Bitcoin ETFs Beat Miners in Q3, Then $430M Slipped Out the Door
US spot Bitcoin ETF buyers piled up 79,800 BTC in the third quarter — nearly double the 41,300 BTC miners produced — but almost all of it landed in two short windows. Then $430 million flowed out on Nov. 5, per Farside Investors, a reminder that fund demand arrives in bursts, not steady drips.
US spot Bitcoin ETF outflows hit $430 million on Nov. 5, according to Farside Investors. That single-day exit lands barely a week after 21Shares published third-quarter data showing ETF buyers had been outrunning miners. The two snapshots pull in opposite directions, and that tension is the story.
The 21Shares report, released Nov. 2 and covering through Sept. 30, put ETF accumulation at 79,800 BTC against 41,300 BTC of newly mined supply. That's fund buying at roughly twice the pace of fresh issuance. On paper, buyers soaked up every coin miners made and then some.
In practice, the buying was lumpy. Two stretches — Aug. 17-27 and Sept. 21-25 — accounted for 91% of all Q3 ETF inflows measured in Bitcoin. The rest of the quarter barely registered. That kind of clustering means supply pressure isn't constant; it shows up in waves, then vanishes.
There's another wrinkle. Long-term-holder balances shrank by 248,000 BTC during the quarter, per 21Shares — a drop far bigger than quarterly mining output. That number is a net change in holdings, not a tally of executed sales, so it can't be read as 248,000 coins hitting the market. ETF ownership and holder-age buckets also overlap, since the same entity can sit in both.
Glassnode offers a fresher directional read. A Nov. 6 capture at 10:39 UTC showed its long-term-holder position metric near negative 151,885 BTC. That figure tracks the rolling 30-day change in cohort supply: coins age in, spending pushes them out. A negative reading means spending outweighs maturation — not that the whole amount was dumped in a day.
The metric leans on an entity's averaged purchase date, weighted around 155 days, and strips out exchange-wallet supply. Because its window doesn't line up with the third quarter, it can't settle whether distribution sped up or slowed down. For now, the ETF-vs-mining headline holds — with a $430 million asterisk attached to it.
