Asia-Pacific stocks slide as Nasdaq's 6% plunge rattles markets
Asia-Pacific stocks fell Friday, tracking a tech-led selloff after the Nasdaq 100 dropped more than 6%. Japan and South Korea took the hardest hits, while Hong Kong, mainland China and Australia also slipped. The dollar held flat against the yen.
Asia-Pacific markets opened Friday on the back foot, taking their cue from a tech-led rout in the US. The Nasdaq 100 plunged by more than 6% at the closing bell last night as investors chewed over the Democratic Party's midterm election victory. The selloff rippled straight into Asia's afternoon session.
Japan's Nikkei 225 led the slide, falling by 6.26% at 7:09 am CET. South Korea's Kospi Composite was close behind, dropping by 6.18% at 7:10 am CET. Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined by 1.04% at the same time.
Mainland China also felt the pressure. The Shenzhen Composite decreased by 2.22% at 7:11 am CET, while the Shanghai Composite slipped by 1.18% at 7:09 am CET. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dipped by 0.49% at the closing bell.
Currency markets stayed calm by comparison. The dollar was flat against the yen at 7:12 am CET, going for ¥157.8155. That steadiness stood out as equities across the region sold off.
