Airbnb's AI travel agent arrives in early 2027, and it won't look like a chatbot
Airbnb says its long-teased AI travel agent will reach users in the first half of 2027, according to its Q3 shareholder letter. CEO Brian Chesky pitched it as a travel-specific experience that assembles maps, photos and itineraries in real time, not another text-heavy chatbot. The reveal landed beside blockbuster earnings.
Airbnb has put a date on its AI ambitions. The travel giant told shareholders Thursday that its custom AI travel agent will roll out to consumers in the first half of 2027, per its Q3 shareholder letter reported by TechCrunch. That's a tighter commitment than the vague "sometime next year" the company floated previously.
The concept is deliberately not a chatbot. Chesky said on the earnings call that general-purpose agents like Muse and Instinct handle simple chores fine — restaurant reservations, scheduling — but trip planning is a different beast. He pointed to surveys showing 80% of travelers actually enjoy researching trips, comparing homes and flipping through photos with the people they're traveling with.
So Airbnb built its own. The agent pulls from a library of hundreds of travel-specific interface components — maps, photos, comparisons, calendars, itineraries — and composes them in real time around whatever a guest asks. Chesky described it as feeling "a little bit like generative UI," serving up the right interface at the right moment.
It won't stop at booking, either. Airbnb says the agent will handle changes to reservations, payment issues, refunds, rebooking and 24-hour safety support — tasks an outside agent can't easily pull off. Down the road, the company wants it covering hotels, services and experiences too, the areas it's been pushing since last year's redesign.
The announcement rode in on a strong quarter. Revenue climbed 19%, hitting $4.87 billion and beating Wall Street's estimates, while Airbnb lifted its 2026 growth forecast into the high teens, up from the mid-teens. "Airbnb is back in growth mode," Chesky told analysts, calling it the company's fastest revenue growth in more than three years.
Airbnb leans on nearly 20 years of matching hosts and guests to shape how the agent behaves, arguing that insider knowledge of both sides of the marketplace gives it an edge outsiders lack. Now the clock is ticking toward that 2027 debut.
