Von der Leyen Tells Brussels: AI Must Earn Its Keep in the Real Economy
Ursula von der Leyen used the WinWin Brussels Summit to argue that AI is a huge opportunity — but only if Europe plugs it into the real economy. She name-checked self-driving cars as the test case, called for one approval process instead of a maze of barriers, and flagged a funding gap for European scale-ups.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took the stage at the WinWin Brussels Summit on Tuesday with a blunt message: artificial intelligence is an enormous opportunity to lift prosperity and improve lives, but it can't stay stuck in the lab. It has to get to work in the EU's real economy, she said, according to Breaking The News.
Her showcase example was autonomous vehicles. Von der Leyen said European companies should be the ones designing and building them — and that Brussels should clear the runway with a single approval process while tearing down every other barrier in the way. One rulebook, not a patchwork, is the pitch.
She didn't leave energy out of it either. Von der Leyen framed the clean transition as the route to an EU that is both energy-independent and competitive, pointing to more than €1.2 trillion poured into sustainable activities across the bloc since 2021.
Then came the money problem. European entrepreneurs need more capital, she said, because European scale-ups typically raise 50% less than their peers in San Francisco. To make her case, she held up the Scaleup Europe Fund, which has backed eight companies and helped them raise close to €5 billion in just two months.
The comments land in a busy stretch for AI policy and finance. Bank of France Governor Emmanuel Moulin warned Monday about risks tied to massive AI investments increasingly financed by debt, while Oracle's share sale plans and CrowdStrike's new AI kill switch kept the sector in the headlines this week.
What comes next is whether von der Leyen's push translates into actual deregulation and cash. A single approval lane for autonomous vehicles would be an early, tangible test of whether Europe can move from summit talk to real-economy rollout.
