T3 Crypto Crime Unit Fell Apart in August and Nobody Announced It
The T3 Financial Crime Unit — the Tron, Tether and later Binance anti-crime alliance — shut down in late August 2026, Bloomberg reported on Nov. 4. Slow responses and weak coordination among the members did it in. The outfit had frozen more than $450 million in tainted USDT before going quiet.
Bloomberg dropped the news on November 4, 2026: the T3 Financial Crime Unit wrapped up in late August. That's roughly two months of silence before anyone outside the room caught on. No press release, no blog post, not a word from any of the partners.
The reported cause is a little ironic. Slow response times and members that couldn't stay in sync, according to Bloomberg. For a unit whose entire pitch was freezing dirty money fast, that's a rough way to go out.
T3 launched in September 2024 with the Tron blockchain organization, stablecoin issuer Tether and analytics firm TRM Labs at the table. The target was narrow: criminals using USDT, with a heavy focus on flows over Tron. The unit worked with law enforcement in 23 jurisdictions worldwide. Binance signed on about a year in, joining the expanded T3+ program in September 2025.
On paper the scorecard held up. Cumulative freezes hit $250 million by mid-2025, then climbed past $450 million by May 2026 — nearly double in under a year. The seized funds traced to hacks, terrorist financing and drug trafficking. Some freezes landed within 24 hours of a law enforcement request, which in cross-border investigations is basically lightspeed.
The silence around the shutdown is the part that stings. Regulators and users were told the unit existed and never told when it stopped. For cops, one coordinated channel across three major players is now gone — agencies may have to chase each company separately, which slows down cases where hours matter.
Tron says it's pursuing more work on illicit activity and has hinted at announcements soon. Tether plans to keep going with TRM Labs, including participation in the firm's Beacon Network for real-time intelligence sharing. Its ability to freeze USDT hasn't moved — only the coalition that coordinated it has.
