Moscow Blames US and Seoul for Escalating Korean Peninsula Tensions
Russia's Foreign Ministry says the US and South Korea are pouring fuel on Korean Peninsula tensions with massive war games near the North's border. Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the drills openly provocative Tuesday and warned they now stretch from land to cyberspace. Moscow wants Seoul to stand down — and says Pyongyang's military buildup is fair game.
Moscow is pointing a very loud finger at Washington and Seoul. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Tuesday that tensions on the Korean Peninsula keep climbing, and she laid the blame squarely on US and South Korean military drills staged near North Korea's border.
Zakharova didn't mince words. She called the maneuvers openly provocative and said the participants themselves admit the exercises are designed to rehearse preemptive strikes on North Korea — nuclear weapons included.
And the problem is growing, she added. The drills now stretch beyond land into air, sea and cyberspace, with both their frequency and their scale on the rise, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Moscow named names: the Iron Mace, Hoguk and Freedom Flag exercises, plus a trilateral military cooperation push that brings Japan into the mix.
Russia also had North Korea's back. It described Pyongyang's drive to strengthen its military capabilities as absolutely legal and justified.
Then came the demand. Moscow urged Seoul to immediately halt what it called dangerous military games and provocations — especially in the demilitarized zone — and to respect Pyongyang's sovereign right to ensure its own security by all available means.
