German factory orders rev up 4.4% as carmakers floor it
Germany's factory order book fattened in September, climbing 4.4% from August, with Destatis pointing to a surge in automotive demand as the engine. Domestic buyers opened their wallets wider than foreign ones, and the yearly tally is up too.
German manufacturers got a September surprise worth celebrating. New factory orders rose 4.4% from the month before on a seasonally and price-adjusted basis, according to the Federal Statistical Office, Destatis. Measured against a year earlier, the order book sits 3.3% higher.
The automotive industry did the heavy lifting. New orders there jumped 10.5% month over month, pulling the broader manufacturing number upward. Consumer goods weren't shy either, popping 14.4%, while capital goods added 5.3%. Intermediate goods edged up 0.5%.
Buyers at home were the boldest. Domestic orders climbed 6.6%, outpacing foreign demand, which grew 2.8%. Inside that foreign figure, orders from the euro area rose 4.5%, while customers outside the Eurozone chipped in with a 1.6% increase.
Destatis released the figures Thursday, and they land as a fresh read on how Europe's largest industrial economy is holding up. For now, the order pipeline is filling rather than draining — a signal worth watching in the months ahead.
