Four planes hit by bomb threats across Europe land safely, no explosives found
Bomb threats rattled European skies as four planes, two of them out of the UK, scrambled to land safely. Searches in Warsaw, Murcia and Sofia turned up no explosives. It follows a Wizz Air jet being escorted into Budapest by a fighter plane a day earlier.
Four planes crossed European skies under bomb threats and every one of them landed safely, with searches turning up no explosives. Two of the targeted flights had departed from the UK. Polish officials said they received threats involving two Warsaw-bound flights, and both touched down without incident.
The Scandinavian Airlines flight from Copenhagen landed at Warsaw's Chopin airport, where a security inspection found no explosive devices, according to reports. The airport closed a landing strip but kept operating, a spokesperson said. The LOT Boeing 737 MAX, also scheduled for Chopin, was diverted instead to Warsaw's other airport, Modlin.
Authorities shut Modlin after the alert, and the jet landed without trouble. Passengers were evacuated and the plane was checked, and nothing was found, spokesperson Adam Szablowski told AFP. He said the airport has reopened and is running normally.
Elsewhere, the BBC reported that a Ryanair plane out of Manchester made an emergency landing at Murcia in southern Spain after another threat, while a fourth flight from Israel was forced down in Sofia, Bulgaria. Francisco Lucas, the Spanish government's delegate in the region, said on X that no explosives were found on the Murcia flight.
The scare is not a one-off. A day earlier, a Wizz Air service from London Luton made an emergency landing in Budapest, escorted in by a Hungarian fighter jet. The plane had been due to leave Luton at 8.15am on Monday for Sofia before a bomb threat arrived during the flight, the airline said.
