Eurozone inflation climbs to 4% as energy prices jump 20.8%
Eurozone annual inflation is expected to reach 4% in October, up from 3.8% in September, according to Eurostat's preliminary report. Energy prices are forecast to soar 20.8% year-on-year, and the spread between member states is wide, from Bulgaria's 6% to Malta's 2.3%.
Eurozone inflation is expected to hit 4% in October, Eurostat said Wednesday in its preliminary report — up from 3.8% in September and right where economists expected it to land. On a monthly basis, prices were forecast to rise 0.4%. The European Commission's statistical office didn't hedge: the headline number is holding above target, and it's creeping the wrong way.
Energy is doing the heavy lifting. Eurostat expects energy prices to jump 20.8% year-on-year. Services are projected up 3.3%, food, alcohol and tobacco 1.6%, and non-energy industrial goods 1.2%. Strip out the energy wildcard and the picture looks far calmer — which is exactly the argument that's about to get loud again.
The pain is not shared evenly across the bloc. Bulgaria posts the steepest rate at 6%, with Greece and Italy tied just behind at 5.6%. On the other end, Malta sits at 2.3%, Germany at 2.8% and Slovakia at 2.9% — a spread that underlines how differently each member state is absorbing the same energy shock.
October's reading keeps the pressure squarely on the European Central Bank, which has spent the past year trying to wrestle price growth back toward its target. A 4% print, driven overwhelmingly by energy, is the kind of number that splits the room: some will call it a supply-side blip, others a reason to stay tight.
The figures are preliminary and can be revised when Eurostat publishes its final October data. Until then, the headline stands: the Eurozone's inflation problem didn't go away — it got a little worse.
