EURC and EURR Promise €1 Redemption — Your Bank Account Says Otherwise
Circle's EURC and Revolut-branded EURR both claim one euro per token. But according to The Defiant, that redemption right doesn't mean instant cash in your bank. Onboarding, issuer conditions, and exchange prices all stand in the way.
Euro stablecoins just got a reality check. The Defiant broke down how Circle's EURC and Revolut's EURR both promise €1 redemption per token — but actually getting euros into your bank account is a separate, condition-heavy process. Issuer accounts, exchange sales, and onboarding hoops are not the same as cashing out.
Why does it matter? A euro-denominated token matches a euro bill, unlike a dollar stablecoin like USDC. If you owe €1,000 in rent, holding USDC exposes you to dollar-euro swings. EURC and EURR sidestep that currency mismatch — assuming redemption works. Circle's white paper warns exchange prices can diverge from the euro and that reserve or liquidity problems can affect redemption.
The issuers aren't the brands you might think. Circle Internet Financial Europe SAS, a French electronic money institution, issues EURC. Bridge Building S.A., a Luxembourg EMI, issues EURR — not Revolut. Bridge's white paper promises one euro or equivalent euro-denominated assets per token, held separately from corporate funds. Revolut just supplies the customer channel, with a phased rollout for selected customers in Denmark, Poland, and Portugal.
Redemption isn't instant. Circle's policy updated Sept. 15 gives retail holders a route distinct from its institutional Circle Mint service. Circle says its retail process should take no more than five business days, unless discrepancies arise. Both tokens' white papers state they're not covered by deposit-guarantee or investor-compensation schemes. And a right to redeem 'at any time' doesn't mean instant bank payment.
What's next? According to The Defiant's earlier coverage, Revolut expects wider EURR availability later in 2026. But published criteria don't guarantee any particular applicant gets accepted. The report's table, checked Nov. 3, 2026, marks some terms as 'Unknown' because disclosures don't establish them. So the €1 promise holds — but the path to your bank is its own journey.
