Electrics grab record 37% of Germany's car market as gas and diesel crumble
Germany's EV surge just went vertical: battery-electric cars took a record 37% of October registrations and, for a second straight month, outsold gasoline and diesel cars combined. A €3,000 buyer incentive is doing the heavy lifting, and Germany already blew past the auto industry's full-year 2026 EV forecast with two months to spare.
Battery-electric cars captured a record 37% of Germany's new car market in October, according to fresh data from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, the country's federal motor vehicle authority. That works out to 94,086 BEVs registered, a 79.5% jump from 52,425 a year earlier. For the second month running, German buyers took home more fully electric cars than gasoline and diesel cars put together.
The combustion side is in freefall. Gasoline registrations crashed 40.5%, landing at 38,516 units and a 15.1% share, while diesel dropped 21.6% and now sits at 23,882 units, or 9.4% of the market. Stack gas and diesel together and pure combustion cars made up just 24.5% of registrations — a full 12.5 points below BEVs alone. Plug-in hybrids slipped 7.9% and account for 28,499 units, though plug-ins overall took roughly 48% of the market. Average CO2 emissions on new cars fell 21.1% year-over-year, now at 79.4 g/km.
The fuse is Germany's new EV incentive, which pays €3,000 for a new BEV bought or leased and up to €6,000 for lower-income households with children. It applies retroactively to cars registered since January 1, and households with taxable income above €80,000 (€90,000 with kids) are cut out. The money is aimed squarely at private buyers, and that's exactly where the KBA numbers moved: private registrations climbed 20.6% in October while commercial registrations slid 8.2%. Private buyers now make up 40.7% of the market.
Germany has run this experiment before and it ended badly — the government axed the previous EV subsidy overnight in December 2023 and sales fell off a cliff in 2024. This time, the cash flows toward buyers who actually need it, and the needle is moving fast. BEVs became Germany's top powertrain for the first time in June at 28.4%, then climbed to 32.4% in August, 34.5% in September and 37% in October.
The industry simply didn't see it coming. Last December, German auto association VDA forecast roughly 693,000 BEV registrations for all of 2026 — Germany passed that mark in October. Year to date, the country has registered 698,230 BEVs, up 60.7% and equal to about 28.2% of the 2,476,290 new cars sold so far, up from roughly 19% across all of 2025. At the current pace, the year should close near 875,000.
Tesla's German numbers swing hard with its quarterly delivery cycle: 12,552 registrations in September with the Model Y as the country's best-selling car, then only 2,932 in October for a 1.2% share. Year to date Tesla is up 206.1%, now at 47,742 cars, but BYD has nudged ahead at 47,961 after a 216.1% gain — and most of BYD's German volume is plug-in hybrids, not EVs. Leapmotor rocketed 288.6% to 3,661 October units, Xpeng climbed 284.4% to 1,380, and SAIC's MG added 48.5% to reach 4,140. Volkswagen Group still holds the EV crown: through September the Skoda Elroq led all EVs with 30,845 units, ahead of the Model Y at 29,464 and the VW ID.3 at 24,352, according to Electrek's tallying of the data. Meanwhile the legacy brands are bleeding — VW fell 4% in October, Audi 8.4%, Porsche 5.7% and Opel 24.1%, with BMW flat and Mercedes the lone bright spot at 8.5%. Volkswagen Group posted a €5.9 billion third-quarter operating loss, its worst since Dieselgate, and has approved cutting 100,000 jobs and closing German plants, while Mercedes trimmed its 2026 car margin guidance to 2-3%. The order books aren't the problem: VW's ID. Polo is sold out with over 30,000 orders and BMW has more than 50,000 for the Neue Klasse iX3.
