Democrats Romp Through Early Midterm Results as Senate Control Comes Into View
Democrats are running the table on midterm night, with Jon Ossoff cruising in Georgia and Roy Cooper flipping North Carolina's open Senate seat — the first of four pickups needed to take the chamber. Republicans' redrawn Florida maps backfired badly, and CBS News now rates South Carolina's Senate race as leaning blue.
Much of the eastern vote is counted and polls have closed across key Midwestern battlegrounds, and the picture is already ugly for Republicans. Two Senate races billed a year ago as toss-ups have turned into blowouts for Democrats — Jon Ossoff's re-election bid in Georgia and the open Republican-held seat in North Carolina. According to BBC News analysis, it's shaping up as a very good night for the blue team.
North Carolina went first. Former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper beat Republican insider Michael Whatley, handing Democrats the first of the four Senate pickups they need to seize the chamber. Eyes have now swung to Republican-held seats in Texas, Kansas and Ohio, where ballots are still being counted. And in South Carolina, the BBC's US partner CBS News rates the Senate race as leaning Democrat — a result that would land like a thunderclap.
The House map is telling the same story. Florida Republicans redrew three Democratic-held districts to make them easy wins, then lost all three. An open seat in western North Carolina flipped to Democrats, and the party looks positioned to gain ground in Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana.
Democrats are doing it on turnout — heavy Black voter participation across the South and a Hispanic vote swinging back in Florida after backing Republicans two years ago. In majority-Black South Carolina counties, Senate candidate Annie Andrews is beating Kamala Harris's 2024 presidential numbers by a wide margin. In Miami-Dade County, which Trump carried in 2024, Democratic candidates are back on top.
Toss-up races across the eastern half of the country are breaking blue in the kind of wins that would deliver Democrats a House majority for the first time since 2022. Counting continues in the Midwest and beyond, but the early returns have already rewritten what looked like a competitive map.
