Coinbase Files for Brazil Crypto License, Says Services Won't Pause
Coinbase has applied to Brazil's central bank for authorization as a virtual asset service provider, beating the country's end-of-October deadline. The exchange says it doesn't expect the review to interrupt its existing Brazilian services, and it's still eyeing a wider push into payments and foreign exchange.
Coinbase dropped its paperwork with the Central Bank of Brazil on Wednesday, applying to operate as a virtual asset service provider under the country's VASP framework, according to a statement shared with Cointelegraph. The filing lands just ahead of the central bank's Friday application cutoff.
The US exchange isn't planning to go dark while regulators comb through its submission. A Coinbase spokesperson told Cointelegraph the company does not expect the review to force a suspension of its current Brazilian services. Existing providers that file by the deadline get to keep running under transitional arrangements while their applications are pending — a grace period that makes the timing matter.
Brazil's new rules raise the bar on governance, customer asset safeguards and compliance, and the central bank wants crypto firms already operating in the country to formally apply by the end of October if they intend to stay. Coinbase is betting its application keeps it on the right side of that line.
It's not alone in the queue. Binance applied on Oct. 23, but took a more surgical approach to the new regime: it restricted crypto lending, margin trading and other services in Brazil, and delisted 22 crypto assets to get compliant, according to Cointelegraph.
Coinbase has bigger ambitions in the market than just keeping the lights on. The company restated plans to bring its 'Everything Exchange' strategy to Brazil, which could stretch into foreign exchange and payments alongside crypto. Those add-on businesses would need their own separate regulatory approvals.
For now, the ball sits with Brazil's central bank. Coinbase keeps serving Brazilian customers through the review, and the next checkpoint is whether regulators wave the application through — or come back with questions.
