China State-Backed ETF Turnover Hits $12.6B as CSI Slides 19% From Peak
Nine China ETFs favored by state-backed investors pulled $12.6 billion in turnover Friday, the highest since July 20 and up fourfold this month. The E Fund ChiNext ETF led with $2.9 billion in inflows, its biggest day in two years. Meanwhile the CSI Index is down 19% from its June peak and margin debt keeps shrinking.
Trading turnover in nine China ETFs favored by state-backed investors exploded to $12.6 billion on Friday, according to @KobeissiLetter. That marks the biggest session since July 20 and the second-largest since January. The number has quadrupled since the start of the month.
The E Fund ChiNext ETF did the heaviest lifting, pulling in $2.9 billion of inflows — its biggest single-day haul in two years. The spike didn't come out of nowhere. These same nine funds had already sucked in $6.9 billion on Thursday, their largest daily inflow since April 2025.
So someone big is buying, and buying fast. State-backed investors are the usual suspects behind flows like these, and the speed of the quadruple suggests a deliberate, coordinated push rather than a casual punt.
The backdrop is ugly, though. The CSI Index has slid 19% from its June 22 peak and sits near its lowest level since July. China's margin debt has also dropped 18%, a decline of $830 million, landing at its lowest since October 2025 as traders ditch leverage.
Put it together and you get a market under real pressure — retail appetite for borrowed bets is fading while heavyweight buyers step in to steady the tape. Whether the state money can hold the line is the question everyone's watching next.
