BlackRock Dumps $405M in Bitcoin, but ETF Investors Are the Ones Selling
BlackRock moved $405.3 million worth of Bitcoin out the door, and the headlines write themselves. The catch: the selling traces back to investors redeeming shares of its iShares Bitcoin Trust, not the asset manager souring on crypto. IBIT is still the biggest spot Bitcoin ETF in the US, with tens of billions in cumulative inflows since its 2024 debut.
BlackRock sold off $405.3 million in Bitcoin, a figure that started making the rounds in a post on X, according to Crypto Briefing. It's a jolt coming from the biggest name in spot Bitcoin ETFs. But the flow runs in one direction for a very ordinary reason: redemptions.
The selling lines up with investors yanking money out of the iShares Bitcoin Trust, ticker IBIT. When shareholders cash out of a spot Bitcoin ETF, the fund has to trim its holdings to match. Two transfers moved to Coinbase Prime in late October 2026 — 3,215 BTC worth roughly $262 million, and another 1,698 BTC at about $136 million. BlackRock says it isn't selling on its own account and that nothing about its Bitcoin stance has changed.
The timing wasn't quiet. Bitcoin ETFs bled heavily that month, and on October 23, 2026 the sector logged a $635 million net outflow in a single day. BlackRock and Fidelity drove most of it — and when the two heaviest hitters in the category head for the exits together, people notice. Bitcoin itself was trading near $80,000 to $82,000 around the time of the IBIT transfers.
Context cuts both ways. IBIT has also posted inflow days north of $405 million, so money has arrived at roughly the scale it's now leaving. The fund launched in January 2024 in the first wave of US-approved spot Bitcoin ETFs, and it became the no-wallet, no-exchange on-ramp for traditional investors. Cumulative inflows since then sit in the tens of billions, and scattered outflow days haven't done much to bend that line.
The most immediate consequence is short-term price pressure. Hundreds of millions in Bitcoin hitting the market does its work whether buyers are hungry or not. And the fact that BlackRock and Fidelity led the same outflow day suggests a wider pattern among institutional investors rather than one fund's clients having a rough afternoon.
For long-term holders, BlackRock's own framing is the one to watch: housekeeping, not a strategy pivot. The firm insists its Bitcoin outlook is unchanged.
