AP Opens Live Desk to Call 2026 Midterm Races as Congress Hangs in the Balance

The Associated Press is taking its race-call operation live to YouTube for the 2026 midterm election, streaming as it declares winners — and keeping a running eye on the Senate and House balance of power map.

Race calls are the AP's signature election-night product: the moment a contest is formally declared decided. Newsrooms across the country lean on those calls to figure out when a race is over, and this year the wire service is putting the process on camera instead of keeping it behind the desk.

The stream pairs each call with a live look at the balance of power map for both chambers — the seat-by-seat tally that shows how the Senate and House are shaking out as results come in.

Control of Congress sits at the center of any midterm. The AP's map is where that fight gets counted, race by race, in real time.

It's a watch-the-sausage-get-made setup for politics obsessives: calls as they drop, plus the running arithmetic of who's up and who's down. The stream is live on YouTube.
