AMD CEO Teases Next-Gen AI Power While Future Chips Are Years Away
AMD CEO Lisa Su dropped a bombshell, revealing top clients are already deep into discussions about the MI500 and MI600 chips, which are years from shipping. This signals massive forward-looking planning by hyperscalers in the AI race. It looks like AMD's roadmap is setting the pace for the next era of tech.
AMD CEO Lisa Su is dropping some serious future talk, confirming that the company's largest customers are already asking about AI chips that won't hit the market for years. She is in active dialogue with top clients regarding the MI500, the MI600, and even products beyond that roadmap.
The company's near-term focus is the MI400 series, which runs on the CDNA 5 architecture and is slated for volume shipment in 2026. But the conversation is already jumping ahead to the next waves of tech.
The MI500 series is scheduled for a 2027 launch and utilizes the advanced CDNA 6 architecture alongside a 2nm manufacturing process. AMD is pushing its ambition hard, targeting more than 2,000 times higher inference throughput than the MI300X within four years.
Then comes the MI600, anticipated in 2028, and Su's comments suggest customers are integrating that entire generation into their current build-outs. AMD plans to roll out new Helios rack-scale AI platforms annually through at least 2030.
Meta is the prime example of these big deals. The tech giant has not only deployed millions of EPYC processors but is also acting as a co-designer in the custom deployment of AMD's Instinct GPUs. This relationship sets the gold standard for these multi-generation commitments.
While these talks are currently just dialogues and not signed orders, the smooth ramp of the MI400 in 2026 is critical. If that near-term milestone hits, Su's predictions about the MI500 and MI600 could transition from mere goals to solid schedules.
