Ukraine Reports Record 2,250 Russian Casualties in One Day
Ukraine's General Staff says its forces inflicted 2,250 casualties on Russian troops on October 21, the highest single-day total reported since the full-scale invasion began. The figure surpasses a record that had stood for about two years, according to the Ukrainian military, which also detailed cumulative and monthly loss estimates.
Ukraine's General Staff reported that Russian forces suffered 2,250 casualties in a single day on October 21, a figure covering both troops killed and wounded. According to the Ukrainian military, it is the highest one-day total recorded since Russia's full-scale invasion began. The previous record, 2,200, had stood for roughly two years.
The General Staff published a ranking of the days with the heaviest Russian personnel losses: October 21 with 2,250; December 19, 2024, with 2,200; October 18 with 2,100; September 27 with 2,090; and November 28, 2024, with 2,030. Three of the five highest daily figures fall in September and October 2026, the military noted.
Cumulative estimates released alongside the record put Russia's personnel losses at approximately 363,820 since the start of 2026. Since February 24, 2022, the General Staff says Russian forces have lost a total of 1,572,790 troops.
The monthly trend has been upward, according to the Ukrainian military: losses stood at 26,090 in February 2026 and reached 46,230 in September, the highest monthly figure of the year. In less than three weeks of October, the General Staff reported, Russian army losses had already approached 37,000 personnel.
In a statement accompanying the figures, the Ukrainian military contrasted its own approach with Russia's, saying Ukrainians do everything possible to preserve the life of every service member and civilian while a Russian soldier is treated as a resource to be expended. It added that Ukraine's Defense Forces are systematically depleting the Russian army's offensive capabilities in order to halt Russia's armed aggression.
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that Ukrainian troops had destroyed a major Russian division during Operation Vivaldi, and also reported how much territory Ukrainian defenders had recaptured during the latest phase of that operation. The casualty figures cited by the General Staff are Ukrainian military estimates and cannot be independently verified.
